  The town is one of the oldest sites in Morocco. Due to its strategic location, it had been targeted , in the past , by many races , which makes its history old , rich and interesting . The hippies, from all over the world, discovered it in 1968, and found it an ideal place to live and fulfill their dreams. Essaouira today is a perfect example of coexistence of different races –Berbers, arabs, Jews, etc. they all live in perfect harmony ,and everybody respects everybody else ’s social and religious values.
